Movies have given us some seriously cool homes to drool over. Who hasn't had house-envy watching 'Home Alone' during Christmas, or daydreamed about throwing an epic party like in Gatsby's over-the-top mansion? Or maybe you've ogled at the sleek and modern architecture of the iconic house in 'Parasite'. Sometimes the houses in movies become the star of the show, and we’ve rounded up the ten most iconic homes in movie history.
Home Alone (1990) - The McCallister House
It wouldn’t be Christmas without watching ‘Home Alone’, right? In the movie, the McCallister House is a quintessential American Georgian style home. The symmetrical design, beautiful red door, and warm, familiar feel of the house create the perfect vibe for the Christmas setting of the film. It’s also the kind of home any child would want to be left home alone in to run amok!
The Great Gatsby (2013) - Gatsby's Mansion
Gatsby's mansion is a stunning representation of Beaux-Arts architecture, with its exaggerated proportions, flamboyant ornamentation, and imposing façade. The mansion perfectly mirrors Gatsby's ostentatious lifestyle and is a testament to the opulence of the Roaring Twenties!
Parasite (2019) - Park Residence
The Park family's modernist house in 'Parasite' is a minimalist yet luxurious dwelling that starkly contrasts with the cramped semi-basement apartment of the Kim family. The clean lines, expansive spaces, and the clever use of natural light perfectly signify the wealthy Park family's seclusion from the rest of the world, and the house is the centre of the action for most of the film.
Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986) - Cameron's House
Cameron's house reflects the mid-century modern architectural style with its use of glass and steel, along with its integration with nature. We don't know what's more iconic: the house or the scene where he famously sends his father’s prized Ferrari crashing from the home’s glass house garage into the ravine below!
Twilight (2008) - The Cullen House
The Cullen house in 'Twilight' is a modern, sleek, and eco-friendly construction that encapsulates Pacific Northwest contemporary architecture. The home is located in Portland, Oregon, and goes by the name Hoke House, named after its owner at the time who built it for his family. The end result: the spectacular contemporary home that plays the role of the Twilight house in the first installment of the massively popular movie franchise.
Iron Man (2008) - Tony Stark's 'Razor House'
Tony Stark's mansion, inspired by the real-world 'Razor House', is a striking epitome of futuristic architecture. Its sleek lines, floor-to-ceiling windows, and dramatic cliffside location create an ultra-modern look, symbolising Tony's cutting-edge technology and avant-garde lifestyle. While this abode technically wasn’t featured in the movie, it heavily inspired it. ‘Razor House’ is owned by none other than singer Alicia Keys.
Mean Girls (2004) - Regina George's House
While Regina George didn’t have the nicest of personalities, she did have a pretty nice abode to call home! Located in the exclusive Bridle Path neighbourhood in Toronto, the home features 13 bedrooms and 14 bathrooms, grand staircases, high ceilings and luxurious décor. The home was advertised for sale in 2022 for a cool $27,000,000 USD - pocket change!
The Invisible Man (2020) - Adrian's Seaside House
Adrian's seaside house in psychological thriller, 'The Invisible Man' is a luxurious and ultra-modern mansion reflecting contemporary architecture. With its vast, sleek design and high-tech features, it perfectly mirrors Adrian's wealth, intellectual prowess, and manipulative control. And it may be familiar to us Aussies as the breathtaking home is in fact located in holiday hotspot, Gerringong, 2 hours south of Sydney’s CBD.
The Notebook (2004) - Noah's Restored House
We all know the famous scene: “A white house with blue shutters, a room overlooking the river, and a big old porch wrapped around the entire house.’’ Sound familiar? It’s Allie describing her dream home to Noah in the classic romance film ‘The Notebook’. A symbol of his enduring love, Noah renovates and restores the old, run down home to fulfill her dream home. The real house is located in South Carolina and is a perfect representation of the Southern Plantation architectural style.
Mrs. Doubtfire (1993) - Hillard's Residence
Nestled in the bustling heart of San Francisco, this charmingly classic Victorian-style home is a character in its own right in the film ‘Mrs Doubtfire’. The interior, complete with bay windows and quaint charm, served as the backdrop for the film's most memorable and heartwarming scenes. Our favourite? Mrs. Doubtfire's hilarious kitchen fire incident.
These movie homes are more than just pretty sets; they're characters in their own right, making our favourite flicks what they are.
