This Wembley Church Conversion Is Divine

A few years ago, we sold one of the most unique properties we had ever come across, a church. Originally built in 1941 as the Wembley Methodist Church, it was a building deeply woven into the local community’s history.

Fast forward to today, and this remarkable building has been thoughtfully reimagined as Grigg House, a striking architectural residence. Named in honour of Miss Mildred Grigg, whose foundation stone from 1941 remains preserved within the original façade, the home retains its iconic Inter-War Gothic frontage and stained glass windows, while the interiors have been completely transformed. And … holy moly, it’s divine!

WHAT TO EXPECT

Step through the contemporary front door and you’ll get the first hint that this is no ordinary home. A light-filled hallway draws you inside before opening into a spectacular open-plan living and dining space. Above, a soaring 5.8-metre void creates an incredible sense of volume, filling the home with light and air.

There’s a softness to the design that makes the space feel both grand and welcoming. Curves appear as a common theme throughout the home, from the sculptural kitchen island to the gentle lines of the walls and the sweeping upstairs void. At the centre of the kitchen sits one of the home’s true showpieces, a dramatic full-height rangehood, textured to add depth and presence, rising all the way to the ceiling.

Walk a little further and you’ll discover a beautifully appointed butler’s pantry, complete with integrated appliances and warm oak cabinetry. Even better, it connects directly to the double carport, making everyday living seamless. From the living space, oversized bi-fold window doors open to a generous outdoor terrace. There’s a lawn for pets and kids to enjoy, alongside an undercover alfresco area designed for long evenings entertaining friends.

And if one outdoor space wasn’t enough, head upstairs to find the rooftop terrace, a second outdoor zone that adds another layer of flexibility to the home. Whether it’s sunset drinks, summer dinners or simply a quiet morning coffee, this is the kind of space that turns everyday living into something special.

WHAT YOU MAY NOT EXPECT

At first glance, you might think this home is purely an architectural statement, and in many ways it is. But what quickly becomes clear is that practicality sits at the very heart of the design, with every detail carefully considered to make daily living effortless. The accommodation is thoughtfully arranged across four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a powder room and multiple living zones, allowing the home to adapt easily to family life, entertaining or quiet retreat.

The master suite is tucked discreetly behind a concealed door that blends seamlessly into that gorgeous fluted feature wall - blink and you might miss it entirely! Inside, the space feels like a private sanctuary, complete with a walk-in-robe and anchored by an extraordinary ensuite where one of the original stained glass windows takes pride of place. Terracotta-toned tiles and antique brass tapware create warmth and character, while curved forms frame the shower and separate toilet.

Elsewhere, clever design moments continue to reveal themselves. A secondary living room sits just off the main open-plan area, complete with a built-in bar, bar fridge and additional storage, the perfect space for movie nights, entertaining or simply giving the family that little extra breathing room when needed. Upstairs, two additional bedrooms are accompanied by a beautifully finished bathroom where natural light pours in through a dramatic skylight, illuminating finishes that feel straight out of the pages of Vogue Living.
